LIGHTING YOUR KITCHEN

Often referred to as ‘the heart of the home’ the kitchen is a place of comfort but also productivity, which often makes the area complex to light. If you take into account all of the activities that happen in the kitchen; family meals, dinner parties with friends and also, perhaps less exciting, cooking and cleaning. There needs to be plenty of lighting provided that is carefully positioned to avoid looking cluttered and over the top. Provide an even and generous spread of light by having sources at different levels of height.

Whether you’re working on a new residential project or refurbishing an existing property, lights can provide the necessary refresh and ensure you are making the most of your kitchen space.

Here are our 5 top tips:

Add a large ceiling light to the centre of the kitchen as your first source of ambient lighting. This sets the tone for the room and provides a welcoming and relaxing space.

Consider the elements within your kitchen: do you have a breakfast or kitchen island? If so, use a cluster of single pendants above the island or breakfast bar. This provides an even distribution of light and looks stylish. Ensure the pendants are matching to avoid clashing.

Recessed ceiling lights look fantastic above a kitchen table. These slot in discreetly to ceilings and can be dotted around to provide a general spread of light.

The beauty of LED items is that they are extremely efficient and also good value for money. Searchlight’s LED lights all have a guaranteed 3 years of use; the low labour aspect is appealing.

Take into account different finishes and styles and how well they will work within your own kitchen.

Industrial Trends Are Here To Stay

The trend in industrial style interiors has seen a massive surge in popularity over the past 10 years. Particularly popular in bars or restaurants, it is now almost uncommon to enter a restaurant or bar without seeing an array of industrial style lighting, especially copper, on display. Stemming from an interior trend inspired by former industrial spaces and weathered buildings; the style is rustic yet modern and aesthetically pleasing. It is safe to say the rustic trend is certainly here to stay and shows no sign of budging.

The 1700s saw the birth of industrial buildings; constructed to be functional and robust, which seems almost ironic considering that nowadays they have since been glamorised to fashionable home accessories.

In terms of lighting, the raw aesthetic turned chic sees an assortment of large metal domes suspending from chunky chains, sleek copper finishes or exposed bulbs suspending from simple black fabric cables. When lit the visible bulbs provide a nostalgic vintage feel, creating a calming and cosy ambience – hence they’re popularity in restaurants. Industrial style is typical of large buildings within cities; coming from abandoned warehouses and factories that have since been converted in to homes.

Add an industrial style light to bring an element of style to your home or desired setting. You should consider blending together a mix of light sources including; table lamps, floor lamps and pendant to cover the whole spread of a room. You could also add a hint of drama to your interiors by using a cage pendant, which will project the light from each cut out section of the shade.

Our top 5 picks:

How To Use The Zeus

If you were asked to consider times when you have walked into a room and felt impressed with the lighting on offer, you may struggle to recall these instances. This is due to poor, or lack of, blending and use of the different lighting methods: ambient, task and feature. Lighting that is too cool will appear harsh, whereas too bright will create an unwelcoming atmosphere.

In order to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, you need to invest in useful sources of light that complement and enhance the natural light available in your desired setting. If you are seeking to light a residential setting, you will be wanting to replicate the effects of natural daylight.

At Searchlight Electric, with the release of our Project Collection catalogue, we have launched a new product – Zeus. Though simple in appearance, the real beauty of the Zeus collection is that it is fit for use anywhere in a residential setting.

Zeus key elements:

OUTDOOR LIGHTING

As we head further into August, we want to ensure we are making the most of the summer season. During summer, we look forward to sunny day time BBQs proceeding to evenings spent socialising with friends in the garden. Having already been lucky enough to enjoy several bright and warm days, we are very much hopeful for more. If you want to enjoy any of these al fresco activities then you may wish to invest in several different options of outdoor lighting; also taking into account the size and design of your garden.

Additionally, outdoor lighting is not exclusive just to summer, it is important to light your outdoor areas to suit the jobs you complete. For example, if you regularly have to walk to the bottom of your garden after dark; you will want to brighten the route.

Consider outdoor settings and any factors you may need to account for; do you need lighting for brightening porches or to insert into your decking? As an example, recessed lighting is great for discretely lighting decking, garden walkways, paths or grass.

The Project Collection is a helpful source of information to guide specifiers through lighting gardens and exteriors. Within the catalogue you will find a wide variety of outdoor fittings, perfect for a range of settings. Useful lifestyle images and instructive advice guides help to illustrate how best the products can be used.

Of course, lighting outdoor areas is different to indoor but you still need to take into consideration the three methods: ambient, task and feature, and how they can be blended together.

Insert Plot Light into garden patios, decking or walk ways. The recessed LED light has an IP rating of 67, you can fit and forget. It is a round stainless steel item with an aluminium body, light shines through 4 sections of the fitting and then it slots discretely into the location of your choice. Delivering 90 lumens from 3 watts, it is a cost effective way of guiding your guests through your garden.

Add a functional wall light to brighten as the evening draws in. The Sapporo range are discrete downward pointing wall lights providing unobtrusive low level lighting. The simple dark grey designs are 3000k, bathing your walls in warm light.

Try the in ground lights for picking out specific features. Paddington, Piccadilly and Euston offer a range of beam angles from 15 to 30 degrees with lumen outputs ranging from 90 to 470. With high grade aluminium bodies and Grade 316 Stainless Steel covers. These robust fittings offer versatility and durability.

For more ambient lighting you should refer to the coastal range. Position Tokyo next to either a front or back door and let the two sources of light add brightness. Yokohama is a downlight which has been designed to illuminate signage and for positions. Whilst Kobe and Kyoto offer a range of sizes of clean round and square designs, suitable for multiple applications.

For guidance on how to best combine different fittings that connect to just one mains power supply, see the plug and play advice guide. Information on how to update your lighting throughout the seasons and the various accessories available: drivers, connectors and extension cables.

Project Collection Catalogue – Student Accommodation Lighting

Lighting in student accommodation has recently undergone an update; moving away from incandescent and fluorescent fittings in favour of LED lighting, which is evidently a far better option for saving energy and is cost effective. LED lights will last for 30,000 hours, in comparison to the 1000 - 2000 hours guaranteed by incandescent light sources.

With the cost of living in university halls ever rising it is becoming increasingly clear that student satisfaction has to be considered. Lighting needs to be simple but also has to meet a student’s requirements such as; studying, getting sufficient amounts of sleep – severely affected by using the wrong sources of light - and safety. As well as this, maintenance teams and university electrical teams are under pressure to be more energy efficient and cost effective.

Lighting a halls of residence is not just for one room, you need to consider it as providing light for a whole home; including a range of indoor and outdoor features. The light provided needs to be simple in appearance to suit the student halls setting but also highly functional.

You will be hard pushed to find a chandelier in a halls of accommodation kitchen but what you will more than likely see is items like ceiling flush fittings and ceiling bar strip lights, similar to that of our own Project Collection catalogue. For example, items like the Janus 20w (page 37) are surface mounted ceiling fittings with integrated LED technology, and are ideal for brightening hallways or bedroom ceilings.

The amenity range is also another useful option to consider such as the Vulcan 2ft with LED (page 119) which is a slim line ceiling bar light and great for applications with restricted ceiling height. Luna (page 116) can be used either on bedroom walls or bathrooms as they have a rating of IP44, meaning that it is splash proof. Both are great sources of ambient light.

Desk lamps are also an essential part of lighting in a student bedroom. They provide a directional source of lighting, which is incredibly useful for studying. Find detailed information on desk lamps within the Searchlight Decorative Catalogue or on the website: www.searchlightelectric.com.

Aside from desk lights mentioned above, all of the items listed can be found within the Project Collection catalogue. Please contact a member of our sales team on sales@searchlightelectric.com to order a catalogue.

PROJECT COLLECTION CATALOGUE - COMBINING DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIGHTING

SEARCHLIGHT have recently created a Project Collection catalogue with purposeful lighting at the forefront of its mind. With this focus, we have carefully considered the various types of lighting and how we can encompass them into our catalogue. You should think of the Project Collection catalogue as a toolkit for lighting residential areas.

When you consider lighting, you need to think of it as flexible and in need of varying layers. To put it bluntly, you wouldn’t have a room lit by solely task lighting. The catalogue provides detailed explanations of how to best combine and use different lighting methods for particular rooms or areas of your home.

Throughout the Project Collection catalogue, we have focused on the three main lighting types which are: ambient, task and feature. We have also provided detailed lifestyle images exemplifying the different types of lighting and how they can best be blended together in unison.

Ambient lighting provides a general wash of light that will brighten a room without being overpowering or garish, like a flush fitting. Any room can benefit from this type of lighting and we should think of ambient lighting as a starting point for any residential setting.

You could then add task lighting in order to provide a strong source of directional light; ideal for study areas, desks and kitchen work surfaces. This could be a recessed ceiling light or a spotlight.

Make your third addition feature lighting, which is used to light and draw attention to a specific feature within a room. This could be a statement pendant or strip lighting in a kitchen. It is perfect for boasting a particular interior feature.

Once you have chosen each individual item you will need to mix them together as this allows for a variety of moods to be created.

PROJECT COLLECTION CATALOGUE - CARE HOME LIGHTING

The importance of lighting in care homes can no longer be ignored. Although, it may not be a person’s first thought when considering key elements for a successful care home; lighting actually plays an intrinsic role. Poor lighting can result in patient falls, depression and low staff productivity. However, all of these problems can be avoided using the correct lighting source and temperature.

The ideal lighting is daylight, which contains a natural blue/white light, has not always been correctly mimicked. Harsh lighting from the likes of phones, computers and fluorescent lights can lead to poor sleeping patterns and a host of other problems. Other important aspects to consider are using the appropriate source of lighting and Kelvin temperature. Using an ambient source will provide a gentle wash of brightness which is not harsh or over powering. For a residential setting such as a care home, the optimal lighting temperature is 3000K as it allows for optimum natural daylight imitation.

When it comes to care homes, the lighting used needs to be specifier specific and so any pre-existing medical conditions need to be taken into account. For example, dementia can be severely aggravated and effected by harsh and incorrect lighting. Researchers have found that using the correct lighting in the bedrooms of dementia patients was successful in regulating their sleeping pattern and providing a more calming setting. There has also been recognised and increased interaction from residents with Alzheimer’s who have been exposed to the appropriate blue/white lighting.

Searchlight have recently developed a Project Collection, which revolves around toolkit lighting; providing users with purposeful sources of light. The lights featured are perfect for placement in a care home as we offer a wide range of energy saving LED fittings, and lights using the optimal Kelvin temperature of 3000K. This catalogue would prove extremely useful for anyone looking to complete a project, particularly Architects, Interior Designers or Electricians.

Searchlight's new Project Collection has launched with a strong focus upon the functionality of each lighting feature. This is the first edition of the Project Collection catalogue. The products featured within the catalogue include a guaranteed three year warranty and are all quality assured. Descriptions and illustrations on how best to install the products have also been included.

The lights are intended to be placed in a residential setting, perhaps hotels, restaurants, student halls of residence and outdoor areas. They are most relevant to those from creative work places, particularly architects, interior and lighting designers.

The catalogue helpfully takes the user through informative lighting techniques so that they can make the most informed choice when purchasing. Considering this, it is no surprise that the entire catalogue has been devised with the specifier at the forefront of our mind.

The Project Collection begins by explaining the three main lighting techniques used and the purpose for them. Ambient, task and feature lighting are considered to be the three most suitable for a residential setting.

To provide a soft and subtle light, similar to natural sunlight, we have used a Kelvin temperature of 3000 throughout all of the products enlisted in the Project Collection. This is the perfect Kelvin for a residential setting as it provides a warm wash of light to any area, be it indoor or external.

We have aimed to take the specifier through each lighting aspect of a residential setting, and have provided lifestyle images to give an indication of the best placement for the lights.

Searchlight Electric celebrates its first 70 years in style

Searchlight Electric celebrated its 70th anniversary in style by holding a dinner party and a night of entertainment at the iconic Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham. Held on the 7th September, around 250 customers, suppliers, colleagues and friends mingled, drank champagne, were served tasty food and enjoyed the evening’s attractions.

The entertainment commenced at the start of the evening with a beautiful saxophonist solo welcoming guests into the suite and a gold star magician who amazed everyone with his sleight of hand and magical illusions. During the meal, the Singing Waiters really set the tone for the evening by performing a unique classical music set. The look on guests faces when the waiters stopped what they were doing and started singing was unforgettable!

An after dinner speaker provided plenty of laughs and then the evening’s entertainment was rounded off with the wonderful Sing Out Sisters with their high energy show featuring top vocals, fantastic choreography and lots of audience interaction so everyone could party the night away on the dance floor.

“Seventy years marks a significant milestone for Searchlight. We began as a one man wholesale electric business in Salford, Manchester, and have since grown to a global company working with partners and suppliers from around the world. We were honoured to be able to celebrate and share this occasion with so many of the key people from the lighting industry who have helped make Searchlight the success that it is today” said Herzl Hamburger, Searchlight’s Chairman.

In this year of celebration, Searchlight is now a key supplier of decorative lighting to many of the household names in the UK and abroad. A big change from a one man band to the company now employing over 150 people in the UK.

From everyone at Searchlight Electric, we would like to say a big thank you to all our friends and colleagues for attending our 70th Anniversary party. We hope everyone enjoyed the evening and entertainment and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Searchlight open to the public and can I buy direct?

Unfortunately not. Searchlight Electric are suppliers to the trade only. We do have a ‘where to buy’ section on our website which will direct you to our nearest stockists.

Searchlight do have a lighting factory shop, specialising in end of line products, samples and clearance products. This is situated next to the product showroom at our Manchester headquarters and open to the public with big savings off retail prices. The factory shop is open Monday to Friday 9.00am-4.30pm.

Why are there no buying prices on the Searchlight website?

Searchlight Electric are suppliers to the trade only. Retail selling prices are visible on the website as a guide for consumers. However, buying prices are only visible to existing customers when they are logged in to their account.

Should I choose a flush fitting or one with a chain?

When buying a ceiling light it is important to consider the height of your ceilings. Many modern houses have low ceilings and require fittings that are flush or semi-flush. Fittings that require a chain can be adjusted by taking out as many links of chain as necessary. Always measure the maximum height of fitting you can accommodate before purchasing your light.

How should I clean my light fittings?

Most light fittings should only require periodic cleaning with a feather duster or a soft, damp cloth. Particular care should be taken to avoid abrasive materials and strong cleaning agents as they will quickly destroy the protective coatings and subject the finish to rapid oxidation and discolouration.

If you are lucky enough to have a large crystal chandelier it may be worth buying some special crystal or chandelier cleaner. With a thorough clean once a year with our Crystal Cleaner spray, together with a light dusting every month, you will maintain the true beauty of the crystal for years to come.

How does the brightness of a low energy bulb compare with an incandescent bulb?

The brightness of light bulbs is measured in Lumens, which is a measure of a light's luminous power. Low energy bulbs can be just as bright as standard incandescent bulbs with a fraction of the power/wattage. The lumens value is listed in the product specifications table where applicable.

Will Searchlight light fittings take LED lamp or low energy equivalent bulbs?

Yes, the majority of Searchlight products are suitable for LED, low energy or standard incandescent lamps. Searchlight longlife LED lamps can be retro-fit into most lights, so it is at the discretion of the end user which lamp type they have in the light fitting.

Can you use a dimmer switch with Searchlight light fittings?

This depends on the type of transformer in the light fitting and the type of light bulb used. It has to specifically be a dimmable transformer to connect to a dimmer and all Searchlight G4 light fittings are dimmable.

You cannot use LEDs with traditional dimmer switches, but you can upgrade to a LED dimmer switch to cope with low electrical loads that is compatible. We would always recommend consulting a qualified electrician if you are in any doubt as to the suitability of a light fitting and the use of a dimmer switch.

Some Searchlight light fittings are supplied with a dimmer switch and these items are identified with a dimmer icon on the individual product pages.

Are lamps included with Searchlight light fittings?

Lamps are included with some Searchlight products. Where a light fitting is listed as LED, this contains integrated LED lamps. Halogen lamps are supplied with most spotlights and some flush fittings. Details of whether lamps are included with light fittings can be seen in the product specifications table for each particular product.

What is the PIR range on Searchlight outdoor lights?

A PIR motion sensor detects changes in the amount of infrared radiation impacting upon it, which can vary depending on the temperature and surface characteristics of the objects in front of the sensor. The PIR sensor range on Searchlight outdoor lights varies depending on the product and this cannot be overridden. Where applicable, the PIR range for a particular product will be listed in the product specifications table.

Are your light fittings double insulated (class 2)?

Searchlight have a great choice of double insulated lights. These are highlighted with a class 2 icon on the product page. Quite a lot of older properties built before or during the 1960's may not have an adequate earth cable so you will need to select what are called double insulated lights, which have two layers of insulation built in to protect the live parts. It is possible to have your house re-wired by your electrician but this can be expensive, so the other solution is to select double insulated light fittings.

What is the lead content in Searchlight crystal light fittings?

Lead crystal light fittings such as chandeliers have more sparkle than lights without any lead. Lead content increases the light refraction and helps to create prisms, or rainbows, when light shines through them. Searchlight full lead crystal light fittings contain a minimum of 24% lead oxide, which makes the product clearer and shinier.

How do I find out the size of the ceiling plate?

The diameter of the ceiling plate can be seen in the product specifications table for each individual product.

How do I install Searchlight light fittings?

Searchlight light fittings are supplied with an instruction leaflet. The instruction leaflet can also be viewed or downloaded on the individual product pages. However Searchlight do not offer installation advice and we recommend employing a qualified electrician to undertake any electrical lighting installation.

Can you supply replacement parts?

Searchlight Electric are suppliers to the trade only. If you have purchased a Searchlight product and require spare component parts, please contact the original retailer for advice as Searchlight do supply selected replacement parts for our light fittings to existing retailers.

Do Searchlight products come with a warranty?

Searchlight offer a warranty for all product to be free from defects in material and workmanship, subject to certain conditions and exclusions, and for a limited time periods from the date the product was shipped to the customer. Searchlight Electric are suppliers to the trade only, so if you have purchased a faulty Searchlight product, please contact the original retailer for advice in the first instance.

Bathroom lighting regulations

IP ratings (Ingress Protection Ratings)

All installations must comply to guidelines which are based on a zonal concept similar to that used for the installation of lighting around swimming pools.

Each zone rating (IP) is determined by the degree of risk of electric shock.

Zone 0

This is the area inside the bath or shower basin and is rated at IPx7.

Zone 1

Refers to the area above the bath or shower up to a height of 2.25 metres and carries a minimum rating of IPx4.

Zone 2

Covers an area 0.6 metres wide immediately next to, and all around zone 1, plus the area over 2.5 metres high directly above the bath or shower. Wash basins should also be treated as zone 2. The minimum rating here is IP x 4. Where water jets are likely to be used for cleaning purposes in zones 1 and 2, the rating is a minimum IPx5.

Outside Zone

Covers any area outside Zone 1 and Zone 2, there is no special requirement in this zone. Bathrooms are now allowed to contain a socket outlet, this must be located 3M outside Zone 1. Lighting circuits and any socket outlet circuit in a room containing a bath and/or shower must be provided with 30MA rcd protection.

Areas Around Sinks

Covers up to 60cm. Zone 2 IPx4 luminaires should be installed in this zone.

It’s all about the Lumens

There seems to be some confusion these days about how to measure the brightness of a bulb. It was relatively simple when we all used incandescent lights. You could choose from a 40, 60, 75 or 100 watt bulb, and we all have a rough idea how bright that will be. With the introduction of CFL and LED technology, this now has got a little bit more complicated.

Nowadays it’s all about the lumens!

A lumen is a standard unit of light as it is perceived to the human eye. Essentially it will tell you how bright something is, unlike a watt, which is actually a measurement of energy consumption or output. The lighting industry has standardised ways that it measures the total emission of light from a product and this information is now included on most product packaging.

Bulb Efficiency

Bulb Type

Bulb Efficiency (Lumens per Watt)

Standard Incandescent Lamp

Approx. 15 Lumens

Halogen Lamp

Approx. 25 Lumens

From March 2014, luminaries have had to carry an energy rating label in line with the EU Directive 874/2012

This label displays the energy efficiency range of the luminaire and the compatibility with the lamps on the market. The energy rating A++ (very efficient) through to E (least efficient) is calculated based on the lumen output and the wattage consumption. The more efficient the lamp, the higher the eco rating.

Where luminaires can be fitted with different rated lamps and/or the lamps are non-removable (LEDs) a bracket indicated compatible energy classes. Where some rated lamps are not compatible with a luminaire, these energy classes are marked out with an ‘X’.

Being in business for 70 years is an accomplishment that should be celebrated, so as part of Searchlight’s 70th anniversary celebrations, the company directors organised a night out for employees to thank them for all their hard work helping to make the company what it is today, especially as many people have been with Searchlight for several years.

Searchlight believe that the success of any business is attributable to one main resource - its people. And the employee party was a great opportunity for the directors to look back and share their favourite Searchlight stories and successes from the last 70 years, thank employees for their contributions and also look forward to prosperous years ahead.

The employee event was held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Manchester on Saturday 21st March and it was attended by over 110 past and current staff across all departments. The three course meal and open bar was enjoyed by all and this was followed by an Abba tribute group as the evening’s entertainment. As always when there is music and alcohol involved, the party soon moved on to the dance floor where the team danced the night away!

Searchlight are looking to diversify into new lighting markets so Mike Newland joined the business as Contract Sales Manager, which is a new role and division for the company, to focus on the supply of Searchlight product for more commercial markets, such as the hotel, hospitality and care home sectors.

The Initial aim has been to understand and develop the market, concentrating on the end users and commercial interior designers, where Searchlight as a brand is relatively unknown.

The company exhibited last November at Sleep in London (leading exhibition in hotel design and development) and recent sales success have been seen in supply for student accommodation and small independent hotels.

The opportunity is huge but long term success will be driven by developing market awareness of Searchlight and the ongoing development of suitable product ranges.

Although Searchlight product has been supplied to some of these sectors via our wholesale channel this is an opportunity to control where our product goes and influence the type and price of product purchased.

Searchlight are committed to providing quality, on-trend decorative lighting products and unsurpassed customer service. With a leading investment and strategy to grow the business, Searchlight turned to Slimstock to help further improve our already industry leading service levels.

To improve product availability beyond the current record of 98%, Searchlight required a system which not only allowed the planning team to gain greater control of the top performing 300 product lines but also had the capability to improve visibility across the entire product range. Given the constantly expanding product range and the high turnover of products in the design-led lighting market, it was also important that the system allowed Searchlight to take a more proactive approach to product lifecycle management. Furthermore, the solution had to easily integrate with our existing Microsoft Dynamics AX ERP system.

Gaining a competitive edge

Whilst searching for a solution, Searchlight reviewed a number of different options. However, after seeing a demonstration of the capabilities of Slimstock’s inventory optimisation software solution, the benefits of implementing Slim4 became immediately clear. While the dynamic nature of the Slim4 ensured the solution had the capability to satisfy the company’s business needs, Searchlight were finally convinced by the user friendly interface which is completely configurable to each users daily, weekly and monthly tasks.

The Searchlight stock controller team of Janette Vickers and Martin Davies have been receiving specialist training with Slimstock over the last few months with regard to forecasting, demand planning and inventory management.

Business-wide performance improvements

Given Searchlight’s already impressive market offering, the implementation of Slim4 will help further bolster the business performance and better position the company to satisfy the needs of our customers. With the implementation well underway, there is no questioning that the future looks bright for Searchlight.

What is LED Lighting

An LED – or ‘Light Emitting Diode’ – is a semi-conductor device that converts electricity into light, providing an efficient source of lighting. And modern LED Lighting uses the latest cutting-edge technology to add style and brightness to your home. LED lights provide a high level of light output for a very low energy input, which helps to preserve the environment and cut down on your electricity bills.

LED lights have a life of up to 30,000 hours, which is up to 20 times longer than the equivalent incandescent lamps, saving up to 85% energy and still producing the same lumens output compared to incandescent lights. Additionally, LED bulbs are an ideal and cost effective, direct replacement for existing lights.

Lighting type Estimated life

LED 25,000 - 30,000 hours

CFL 8,000 - 15,000 hours

Halogen 1,500 - 5,000 hours

Incandescent 1,500 - 2,000 hours

Benefits of LED Lights

The main benefits of LED lights are their energy efficiency and long life technology:

• Use up to 85% less energy than halogen or incandescent lights and up to 30% less energy than CFL lights

• Last up to 20 times longer than incandescent lights and up to 4 times longer than CFL lights

• Reduced energy consumption, saving money on energy bills

• Come to full brightness without need for warm-up time

• Contain no mercury or lead

• Operate at a much cooler temperature, making them a safer option than halogens

• Environmentally friendly – cuts greenhouse gas emissions and reduces landfill

LED lights are more expensive to purchase initially, however, on top of energy bill savings, you won’t have to replace the bulbs nearly as often (if ever), making them more cost effective in the long run

Frequently Asked Questions

Lumens

A lumen is a standard unit of light as it is perceived to the human eye. Essentially it will tell you how bright something is, unlike a watt, which is actually a measurement of energy consumption or output. Lumens are now the standard unit for measuring the amount of light produced by a light source. And the higher the lumens, the brighter the light.

A standard LED lamp will produce approx. 80 lumens per watt, compared to a standard incandescent lamp which only produces around 15 lumens per watt. This makes LED lighting much more energy efficient, producing the same output as traditional lighting with a fraction of the power.

Colour Temperature

With warm white and cool white colour temperature options, LED Lights provide a modern, designer look for all rooms in your home. The colour temperature of a product is a linear scale of measurement for the colour of light. Measured in degrees Kelvin, cool white is measured in higher numbers and warm light in lower numbers. Cool white is ideal for task-orientated areas like kitchens and bathrooms, whereas warm white helps to create a cosy atmosphere that is more suited to bedrooms and living areas.

Children’s Bedroom Lighting

The appearance and functionality of a child’s bedroom will vary massively depending on the age and sex of the child. For young children the lighting needs to be fun and colourful. And for older children the lighting is often focused more on a study area. Bedroom lighting should illuminate their world in a wonderful way, and a well-designed lighting scheme will grow with the child.

Children's bedroom lighting should be glowing with amazing solutions to suit their sense of style. So we’ve listed some helpful tips and ideas for different lighting options, ranging from the practical to the more decorative and fun.

Lighting Safety

Safety is the primary concern when choosing lighting for a child’s bedroom. We would recommend ensuring that all lights are fitted with low wattage lamps or LED bulbs, which are cooler to the touch and use less energy, as you may have to leave a night light on for long periods for younger children. And even as they get older, most children to tend to forget about turning the lights off when they leave the room!

All wall lights should be out of reach of a small child, to prevent them from accidentally burning their hands by touching the light bulb out of curiosity. As a precaution, it’s advisable to use something other than halogen bulbs in a child’s room, as these generate extreme heat.

Lighting Styles

Young children’s bedrooms are an opportunity for fun, playful lighting with bright shades to match the colour scheme of the room. Lighting can also help with the bedtime routine and night lights are ideal for making a child feel comforted in the dark.

As a child gets older, the bedroom design must take into account the comfort needed for study and the long hours spent doing homework. So the lighting should be engaging and productive, whilst providing adequate lighting without placing too much strain upon the eyes.

Ceiling Lights

Natural lighting is the best source of light to illuminate a children’s bedroom during the day. However, at night, a durable and versatile ceiling fitting will provide ambient, overhead light and ensure the child’s room is well lit at all times.

Pendant lights can provide a real statement lighting feature and are ideal for practical, general lighting or task lighting. Alternatively, spotlights offer a versatile and modern lighting effect with great directional light just where it’s needed, such as a play area or work area.

Recessed ceiling lights can also be fitted overhead, with wide beam lamps distributing a better spread of light over designated areas of the bedroom. Recessed lights also give off a soft subtle glow, which creates the illusion that the space is larger than it actually is.

Table Lamps

Table lamps are a popular bedroom lighting solution, as they can fine-tune the atmosphere of a room in more ways than one. They are an easy and relatively inexpensive way of freshening up the colour scheme, and are ideal for distributing subtle or bright light into certain areas of the bedroom, such as beside the bed if they enjoy reading at night.

A child’s bedroom wouldn’t be complete without a desk lamp, no matter what the age of the child. Desk lamps are flexible and versatile, focusing light onto the required spot. So they’re perfect for younger children drawing or doing puzzles, as well as for older children reading or studying on the computer.

To ensure a child isn’t straining their eyes, table lamps and desk lamps should be positioned to avoid the direct glare faced while working. So there should be no shadows while writing and the light should fall directly into the open page, for the maximum reading comfort.

In Conclusion

Consider the types of activities your child will be doing in the bedroom and whether they will need extra light. Searchlight’s extensive range of stylish and practical lighting will transform any child’s bedroom into an exciting interior. Whether you are looking for a modern ceiling light or functional task lighting, we can assure you that, as the UK’s largest most comprehensive lighting supplier, we have light fittings available to match the style and character of any child’s bedroom.

How to Light a Room

Lighting can dramatically affect the appearance of a home, both inside and out, making it look and feel stylish. The right lighting can add drama, set the tone and transform any space. And, with careful planning, light can make a small room look open and airy or a large room appear cosy and inviting. For it to be most effective, lighting should be as carefully planned as any other element of interior design, especially when decorating a new house or apartment.

Advance Planning

In the first instance, identify how the space is used and the activities that take place in the room. The nature of the activity will influence the type of lighting fixture you will choose for that space. You may need different types of light for specific functions.

For example, a kitchen will need brighter lights, such as spotlights, for the food preparation area. You don’t want to be chopping the veg in a poorly lit room, as you might lose a finger! On the other hand, you may want to incorporate a dimmer to provide a more atmospheric light for that romantic dinner.

Dare to be different

If the ceiling is very high, you might want to consider increasing the light level. And if the room is painted in dark colours which absorb more light, additional lighting may also be required. Various lighting techniques and lighting controls provide you with the flexibility to adjust and adapt the mood and style of your home.

Applied expertly, lighting can make tasks easier to perform and increase security, allowing you to take full advantage of your home and enjoying its full potential. You can choose any of these room lighting examples, or get creative and light your home in a way that suits your own individual style.

Recessed Lighting

If your home is a little dark, you can choose recessed lighting to add brightness. Recessed lights give off a spread of light over the room, which creates the illusion that the space is larger than it actually is. You can now feel the added elegance and style reflected in your space.

Wall Lights

Wall brackets will spill indirect light onto sections of the wall to form interesting backdrops. Wall lights are a great way of introducing more light into a room and they can enhance the décor and furniture layout, by creating a multitude of layered lighting effects.

Table and Floor Lamps

If you don’t have the option of recessed lights or wall lights, then table and floor lamps are ideal for task lighting any space and providing some extra brightness. There is no doubt that well placed, colour coordinated table and floor lamps give any room the ambience you want whilst providing the just the right amount of light.

Express Yourself

With so many different lighting options available for every room in your home, it’s easy to express yourself with lighting schemes that reflect your own personality. Light fittings should serve a functional purpose and add a decorative element to your home.

Consider the style of the room – is the design contemporary, traditional, eclectic? What mood or ambience do you want to create in each space? Consider the seating areas - where will people sit? Consider the architectural features – what points are to be emphasised? And then the rest is down to your own individual taste. So you can decorate your home to show off your character and style, whilst bringing a touch of sparkle to the interior of your home.

How to make the most of garden lighting

With the correct outdoor lighting to complement the different plants, flowers and landscaping, your garden can be transformed into an ideal area for many purposes, such as garden parties or your own private retreat. However, lighting the exterior of a property often requires more planning and creativity than lighting an inside room.

Searchlight offer everything from decking and pathway lights, to wall lights, bollards, post lights and porch lights, with a versatile range and endless lighting options for around the garden. With an extensive range of lighting choices and so many different styles of gardens, knowing where to start can be a little confusing. So we’ve listed some helpful ideas and tips for you to consider for making the most of your garden lighting

Lighting Plan

Where and how you place your outdoor lights is paramount in garden lighting. Initially, we would recommend choosing the suitable places for your garden light points, taking into account where the lights would fit perfectly without causing any obstruction. You can create a better shadow effect in your garden by installing lights in front of plants.

Garden lights must serve the purpose of being both functional and ornate, by adding to the decorative element. However, they also need to be subtle and enhance a garden’s beauty when the sun goes down. And if you’re creative, you can control what is seen (and not seen) with tactical outdoor lighting.

Lighting Safety

As evening falls and daylight fades, it's nice to be able to throw a switch and light up the garden so you can stay out for longer. However outdoor and garden lighting can have other practical uses. For example, if you have steps in the garden, it is advisable to fit step lights to avoid tripping.

Post Lights are a great way of lighting up pathways for safety and helping to ensure the exterior of your home is lit for security. Outdoor wall lights and hanging lanterns create a safe and welcoming environment for the front of your home, in addition to enhancing the outside of your property.

Lighting Types

Outdoor lighting is IP rated – the higher the rating the more resistant the fitting is to the elements. All external lights should be waterproof, durable and compliant with safety regulations. IP44 rated garden lights are splashproof, and IP67 rated lights are water tight (submersible) and recommended for gardens near to the coast.

As outdoor lights are often left on for many hours, it is recommended to use LED or energy saving bulbs, as these consume minimum energy. Low wattage lamps are also considered safe, creating low level lighting around the garden in the evening, which isn’t overly bright and difficult for eyes to adjust to the light.

Lighting Styles

Style is vital in determining the ambience of your garden. A combination of small spotlights and post lights can create a sense of theatre, leading you from one area of the garden to another. By illuminating from the floor with uplighters, you can also highlight the best parts of your garden.

Decking lights and spike lights will illuminate your garden and patio area to create a space you can enjoy any time. Lighting up your garden, patio or driveway with bright and eye-catching outdoor wall lighting will help bring your garden to life, turning an ordinary garden into an extraordinary one.

Make your exterior lighting as stunning as your interior, with our extensive range of traditional and contemporary outdoor lights. Searchlight’s stylish and practical outdoor lighting is perfect for enhancing the outside of your property and bringing the garden to life, so you can enjoy it for longer once night falls.

Selecting The Perfect Chandelier

For centuries, wooden and wrought iron chandeliers have provided light for all kinds of interior spaces and, in more recent times, chandeliers have provided that special decorative element and bit of sparkle for many home interiors.

Chandeliers can illuminate the entire room and are an excellent way to show off your style. Stunning crystal chandeliers capture and reflect the light and add luxury to any home, providing practical lighting as well as an elegant ambience.

Where to hang a chandelier?

Chandeliers are a centrepiece light fixture and the main focal point for any room. Very popular in living rooms, dining rooms and hallways, chandeliers have become increasingly popular in other areas of the home, such as bathrooms and bedrooms.

A chandelier should be large enough to draw the eye without taking up too much space, so there is nothing to see in the room but the light fitting itself. Searchlight chandeliers range from the elegant to the purely functional, and are sure to provide a special atmosphere anywhere they are placed.

With chandeliers, size is everything.

You must keep the ceiling height in mind and consider the size of the room before choosing any chandelier. Don’t forget to measure your ceiling height, as not all ceiling heights are the same. You don’t want to fit a chandelier that hangs too low and have people banging their heads on it, or a light that is so high you need to buy a bigger ladder to simply change a bulb.

As a general rule, you want the bottom of the chandelier to be approximately eight feet above the floor, which will allow enough room for even the tallest of people to walk underneath it without ducking their heads.

When determining the diameter of a chandelier for a certain room, Searchlight has a simple formula to use as a helpful guide. Measure the length and width of your room in feet, and add the two numbers together. For example if the room is 16ft x 12ft, the total is 28. So an ideal size chandelier for that room would be 28 inches diameter.

In a dining room, the bottom of the chandelier should be approximately 2.5 to 3 feet above the dining room table. The diameter of a chandelier in a dining room should be approximately 12 inches narrower than the width of the table and positioned centrally, directly above the table.

With chandeliers, size is everything.

The right chandelier can transform any space into a vibrant interior and add amazing character to any room in your home. Unfortunately, a poorly selected chandelier can be an unsightly monstrosity that takes over the space and blinds people with the glare when walking into the room.

To choose a good chandelier, you need to consider the entire decor of the room and what statement you want to make, be it functional, beautiful, eye-catching, subtle or simply decorative. As a basic rule, if the room décor is traditional, choose a more ornate, decorative chandelier. And if the room is more modern, select a simpler, less decorative chandelier. Glare can also be avoided by choosing a chandelier with shades.

Searchlight have an extensive range of chandeliers available to compliment the decoration scheme of any room. From classical crystal chandeliers to contemporary modern fittings, Searchlight caters for the wide diversity of material, functionality and design demanded by today’s homeowners.

But remember, if you have low ceilings, you should be very careful with your selection.
